The Effect of Laughter Therapy on Moderation in Drinking, Awareness, and Stress in Female College Student Drinking

Abstract
This study examined the effect of laughter therapy on moderation in drinking, awareness, and stress in female college student drinking. This study used a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The participants were comprised of 77 female college students who drink. Forty female college students were assigned in the experimental group and the other 37 female college students made up the control group. Laughter therapy 6 times a week for 3 weeks was implemented. Each session lasted 60 minutes. The experimental group received laughter therapy intervention. The data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 12.0. There was a significant effect in the degrees of stress (t=-2.01, p=.047) and moderation in drinking (t=-1.30, p=.032) in the experimental group compared to those in control group. This study provides evidence that laughter therapy is an effective intervention in improving moderation in drinking and stress in female college students.
